Government of India honours Sugata Mitra for Hole-in-the-Wall

The Dewang Mehta award for Innovation in Information Technology was conferred on Dr. Sugata Mitra on 12th April 2005. The award, presented by India’s Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran, is in recognition of Dr. Mitra’s discovery of the pedagogy, science and technology of Minimally Invasive Education, popularly known as Hole-in-the-Wall.

The award for Innovation in Information Technology, instituted by the Department of Information Technology, Government of India, recognizes innovative work with the potential of making an impact on national development or bring fame to the country.

Expressing his happiness at receiving the award, Dr. Mitra said, "I am humbled by this prestigious award. The Hole-in-the-Wall experiment has the potential to bring computer literacy to millions of Indians across the land.”

Mr. Dayanidhi Maran said, “I congratulate Dr. Sugata Mitra and express the appreciation of the Government for his contribution in making the Indian IT sector a vibrant and shining one.” According to Mr. Maran, the award is an important indicator of quality, reliability and innovation.
