HiWEL at WSIS Event

Hole-in-the-Wall Education Ltd. (HiWEL) participated in an exhibition – ICT 4 all – in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. The exhibition, which was held from 15-19 November 2005, was a parallel event to World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) 2005. Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), Government of India, had invited HiWEL, along with a select group of companies, to be part of the India Pavilion at the exhibition. The India Pavilion was inaugurated by India’s Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Shri Dayanidhi Maran.

The objective of ICT 4 all was to share global initiatives in people-centred development through Information and Communications Technologies through a lively exhibition with interactive workshops. The exhibition provided a platform to organizations of all hues and from all parts of the globe to interact & exchange ideas, to present and showcase concrete solutions from the effective worldwide use of ICTs. Hundreds of innovations in areas ranging from e-governance, inclusive access, education, health and development were displayed in various pavilions.

The central theme of the India Pavilion was "ICT 4 Development and Solidarity" and, in keeping with this theme, HiWEL displayed its playground computer and presented its initiatives for the education of rural poor and urban slum children. In addition to displaying the physical product the exhibit displayed the Learning Dynamics of Minimally Invasive Education (MIE) pedagogy that is intrinsic to the Hole-in-the-Wall methodology. Over 500 delegates and visitors evinced interest in Hole-in-the-Wall presentation at the Indian Pavilion at WSIS 2005.

About WSIS
WSIS is the abbreviation for World Summit on the Information Society. The Summit is popularly referred to as WSIS (pronounced wiss-iss). Envisaged in two phases, the first Summit was held in Geneva 10-12 December 2003, where the foundations were laid by reaching agreement on a Declaration of Principles and a Plan of Action. The second phase was held in Tunis, 16-18 November 2005, to implement the agenda leading up to achievable targets by 2015, and to agree on unfinished business, most importantly on the question of Internet governance and of financing mechanisms.
