Hole-in-the-Wall reaches Mizoram and Nagaland
HiWEL has recently signed Memorandums of Understanding for setting up Hole-in-the-Wall Learning Stations with two states in North-East India viz. Mizoram and Nagaland. The Memorandums of Understanding (MoU), which have been signed with the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan of the respective states, take HiWEL's presence in the North-East to three states. Read more...

Jaipur gets its first Playground Learning Centers
The Mayor of Jaipur, Mr. Ashok Parnami, dedicated 5 Hole-in-the-Wall Playground Learning Centers to the children of Jaipur Municipal Corporation schools on Friday, 25th April. This marks the beginning of a unique public-private-community partnership in Jaipur where several organizations have come together to impact the children and community in the underprivileged areas of Jaipur. AP Tribal Welfare Department partners with HiWEL
The 2001 population census placed Andhra Pradesh’s population at 75.7 million with the literacy rate of 60.5%. Out of the total population, almost 5 million is tribal with a literacy rate as low as 17%. These tribes are economically backward, engaged primarily in cultivation, forest product gathering and casual labour. Read more...

Education Leaders call on us
On the evening of 23rd September 2005, Education Secretaries and State Project Directors, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) had a chance to witness a Hole-in-the-Wall project in action. Government of India honours Sugata Mitra for Hole-in-the-Wall
The Dewang Mehta award for Innovation in Information Technology was conferred on Dr. Sugata Mitra on 12th April 2005. The award, presented by India’s Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran, is in recognition of Dr. Mitra’s discovery of the pedagogy, science and technology of Minimally Invasive Education, popularly known as Hole-in-the-Wall. President Karzai visits Hole-in-the-Wall
On his recent visit to India, the President of Afghanistan, His Excellency Mr. Hamid Karzai took time out from his busy schedule to visit one of the Minimally Invasive Education (MIE) Learning Stations in New Delhi. Invited by the Ministry of External Affairs to experience Hole-in-the-Wall Experiment first hand, President Karzai spent time with over 50 children at Vivekananda Camp, a slum in south Delhi where an MIE Learning Station has been set up. A Learning Station at the top of the world
The Hole-in-the-Wall Learning Stations have a history of being deployed in out-of-the-way and out-of-the-mind locations, and perhaps none more so than Stok, a village in Ladakh. Stok is on the outskirts of Leh, the capital of Ladakh - about 15 km from it. Setting up a Learning Station in a place like Stok throws up its own set of challenges. With an altitude of over 11000 ft and temperatures going as low as minus 30 degrees celsius in winters, the cold desert is not the usual Learning Station setting. Read more...
